Black labrador Shiraz is rushed in after being hit by a car. Her leg is so badly damaged, owner Alistair is worried she might lose the leg. As Professor Noel Fitzpatrick fights to save her limb, he's not only dealing with the break but also the serious threat of infection which could limit Shiraz's hopes of recovery. Jackie brings in Rosie, her beloved cocker spaniel, who has been limping on her left leg. Scans reveal a bulging disc in her spine as well as nerve damage.
In theatre, Noel faces a tricky situation when the screws don't fit, forcing him to improvise in order for the surgery to be a success. Basset hound Elmer is the much loved and pampered dog of Jacqui. His legs bend out and he struggles to walk normally. Noel's able to straighten them, but it's less easy convincing Jacqui that Elmer needs to go on a diet.
