In the midst of an economic catastrophe, the national parks provide a source of much needed jobs; the park idea changes to include new places and new ways of thinking. President Franklin D. Roosevelt agrees to expand the park idea to include historic sites and battlefields, and then, in the midst of the Great Depression, he creates the Civilian Conservation Corps, which spawns a 'golden age' for the parks through major renovation projects.
