Robert Donat was born on March 18, 1905 in Manchester, England. He was among the most popular British actors of the 1930s amongst both audiences and his film industry colleagues. Donat starred in historical dramas such as 1933's The Private Life of Henry VIII and The Count of Monte Cristo (1934), as well as Alfred Hitchcocks The 39 Steps (1935), and 1939's Goodbye Mr Chips, for which he earned the Oscar for Best Actor.
