Footprints In The Sand is a story of love for family, country and culture. Geoffrey Stewart is a wiry, good-humoured Martu man born 60 years ago at an extremely remote location in the Gibson Desert, 600 km northeast of the town of Wiluna. It is over 40 years since "Yullala", as Geoffrey is better known, has visited his birthplace. Footprints in the Sand tracks Yullala and members of his community back to that location. It is an emotional journey, whose significance lies not only in the length of time since visiting his birthplace but, also, in Yullala's particular parentage.

Now imagine this same group of men donning their Pierre Cardin suits and engaging in underground fashion shows every Saturday night for prizes, and more importantly - self-respect. Interviewed by Robin Hughes, art historian Bernard Smith talks about his life and career. Born in Sydney in 1916, to a working-class Irish mother, Rose Anne, who came to Cairns in 1915 and fell pregnant to a gardener, Charles Smith, he grew up as a state ward with a foster family in Burwood. He got a scholarship to teacher's college and his first posting was to Murraguldrie, a "state pine forest, half way between Wagga and Tumbarumba". His next posting brought him back to Sydney, where he met his wife Kate. He gave up painting and has since taught at every level with the aim of developing an audience for art - "the essential part of his life's agenda". (From Australia, in English)
