What would you do if a natural disaster was heading for you? Would you panic? We like to think we'd react well, but the truth is, most of us wouldn't - for a very basic reason - our brains partially shut down, and we can react in really weird and potentially dangerous ways. But as our climate changes, Australia will experience more extreme weather events. To drive home these twin messages from brain science and climate science, Catalyst's Dr Jonica Newby has come up with an audacious plan to help every Australian family be better prepared.

On December 12th 1996, Dr Gary Fulcher's life changed forever. While driving his car, he had a hyperglycaemic episode due to his insulin-dependent diabetes. He pulled off the side of the road, but didn't turn off the engine. Gary woke up on fire...and his seat belt buckle had melted. Luckily the fire brigade was only 500 metres down the road, but by the time they had freed him, he had third degree burns to 60% of his body.

Mikhail Khodorkovsky, formerly the wealthiest man in Russia, was arrested at gunpoint on October 25, 2003. After challenging the absolute power of Vladimir Putin, his oil company, YUKOS, was seized, followed by a trial that caused international outrage. Khodorkovsky's rise and fall are a chilling metaphor for the violent political and socioeconomic changes occurring in Russia in the last two decades. This program looks at how liberty and the rule of law have become casualties of the new Russia in a compelling scenario of political intrigue in an oil dependent economy.
