Japan's 7000 islands cover an incredible range of extreme climates from frozen seas and snow-capped mountains, to sun kissed beaches and steamy mangroves. Winter can be brutal, and Japanese snow monkeys endure the cold by basking in volcanic pools. Spring is a busy time for Japanese fishermen and the sea birds that catch fish for them. In contrast, summer in the southern islands is sweltering, with crabs patrolling the steamy mangroves.

The Philippines are a breeding ground for many rare, beautiful and bizarre animals. The mysterious Bearcat looks like a cross between a bear and a cat as is agile in the trees as a monkey. The Philippines is home to one of the worlds most spectacular cave systems, a subterranean world crowded with bats and mysterious insects. On the island of Bohol, swamp-like mangroves are raided by gangs of macaques with a taste for crabs. The Tarsier comes out to hunt at night an animal so small it fits in the palm of a human hand, but has the largest eyes relative to body size in the animal kingdom.
