For two centuries, American whale oil lit the world - illuminating and powering the start of the industrial revolution, and laying the groundwork for a truly global economy. From its stunning rise as an economic force in the 18th century, to its precipitous decline in the decades following the Civil War, the whaling industry mapped millions of miles of uncharted ocean, opened new seaways and markets, employed the world's most multicultural workforce, and shrunk the globe by bringing once remote reaches of the earth into contact as never before - all the while capturing the American imagination.

Michael Winterbottom's largely improvised 2010 film The Trip , took comedians Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon - or semi-fictionalised versions thereof - on a restaurant tour around northern England. In this witty and incisive follow-up, Winterbottom reunites the pair for a new culinary road trip, retracing the steps of the Romantic poets' grand tour of Italy and indulging in some sparkling banter and impersonation-offs. Rewetting our palates from the earlier film, the characters enjoy mouth-watering meals in gorgeous settings from Liguria to Capri while riffing on subjects as varied as Batman's vocal register, the artistic merits of Jagged Little Pill, and, of course, the virtue of sequels. Winterbottom trains his camera to capture the idyllic Italian landscape and the gastronomic treasures being prepared and consumed while keeping the film centred on the crackling chemistry between the two leads. This film effortlessly melds the brilliant comic interplay between Coogan and Brydon into quieter moments of self-reflection, letting audiences into their insightful ruminations on the nuances of friendship and the juggling of family and career. The result is a biting portrait of modern-day masculinity.

In 1931, Harold Lasseter's body was found after perishing in Central Australia's deserts. His diary tantalisingly revealed he'd discovered a fabulous seven mile seam of gold, worth millions, but would 'give it all for a loaf of bread'. Despite hundreds of expeditions since, the gold has never been found. Obsessed with solving the mystery, filmmaker Luke Walker discovers Lasseter's 85-year-old son Bob, still wandering the desert, on a quixotic mission to find the gold that killed his father and destroyed his childhood. But now, 80 years on, is it still possible to piece together the fragments of history Lasseter left behind?
