It was opened up to settlement in the 1980s with the construction of the Southern Highway. Together with plots of land allocated to would-be settlers from all over Chile, the highway was part of a colonisation policy aimed at improving the country's access to the sea and its resources, as well as asserting its sovereignty in border disputes with neighbouring Argentina.
