Best selling historian Peter Ackroyd tells the story of the modern imagination, through the poets and novelists who pioneered an alternative way of living. Inspired by the French Revolution and the American Civil War, artists such as Blake, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Byron and Shelley replaced the rule of God, Church and Monarchy with the emotion, philosophy and intellect of the individual. Each strove for mental freedom from what William Blake called the 'mind forged manacles' of society and authority.

This week Caroline Quentin and the team are in West Sussex at the Nutbourne Pumping Station - and it is a wreck. It closed in the 1970s and is now an industrial-sized bunker full of rusting, redundant, heavy duty machinery. But this ruin was at the heart of a revolution that saved our grandparents' generation and changed society forever. It tells the story of the water we drink, and not that long ago drinking British water could literally kill you.

When William Camden's Britannia was printed in 1586, it staggered its Elizabethan readers. Nothing like it had been seen before. For the first time, the entire British Isles had been described in astonishing detail: the mountains and rivers, the history and customs, the climate and the people of each and every county. Britannia was an encyclopaedic tour of the whole country in a single book. In this three-part series, British cartographer, explorer, writer and broadcaster Nicholas Crane rediscovers this 'lost' masterpiece as, on an epic 5,000-mile hike, he battles the elements in search of Elizabethan Britain.

Invoked against the excesses of royal power in 1215, Magna Carta is perhaps the most famous constitutional document in history. Though very much a product of its time, it has inspired many others, including the American Declaration of Independence and the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights. David Starkey explores its deployment, its contribution to making everyone - even the monarch subject to the rule of law, and how this quintessentially English document migrated to the North American colonies and eventually became the foundation of the US constitution.

In the Sudan, attention is focused on the Mahdist revolt in the 1880s. This is the story of the largest power in the world, motivated and led by devout Christians who pursued their geo-political aims with a missionary and jingoistic zeal. They clashed with an Islamic fundamentalist who sought strength from inflammatory religious proclamations and was intent on purging the corrupt foreign influence on his own society through asymmetrical military means. The parallels with today are stark, especially when one considers that 100 years later, the Sudan hosted another self-styled Islamic revivalist, Osama Bin Laden.

From lowly Corsican army officer to first consul of France, this episode charts the rise of Napoleon to leader of the French nation in the late 1790s. It tells of Napoleon's military triumphs in Italy, Egypt and on the streets of Paris, his marriage to Josephine Beauharnais and leadership of the military coup that swept him into power. It shares in his ambition as an army officer, his highly progressive modernisation of the country during the early years of his dictatorship, but also his acute sensitivity, a personality trait that in later years would prove to be an Achilles heel to his power.

Mary Beard explores the physical world of the Roman Empire, and finds surprising parallels with our own world. Setting out in the footsteps of the emperor Hadrian, she discovers a vast empire bound together by a common material culture, and a globalised economy of such scale that evidence of its side-effects can still be seen today, thousands of miles away from Rome. Mary un-picks the threads of a huge commercial and cultural network, taking in the vital supply of olive oil to Rome and her armies, the slave trade, and the all-important silver mines of Spain. Following the famous Roman road network, and the shipping routes connecting the empire's thriving ports, Mary reveals another side to the Roman Empire, one where builders and traders eclipse soldiers, and starring slaves, not senators, make the most of a hugely connected new world.
