Junior scientist Josephine shows us how to split a light bean and expose all the colours of the rainbow. The light emitted from a regular torch appears white, but when passed through a prism it changes speed and disperses across the differing wavelengths, giving you each colour in the visible spectrum. To conduct this experiment at home, you will need a few torches, a glass prism, red, green and blue cellophane, rubber bands and a darkened room.

When war broke out in Europe in July 1914, people on all sides believed it would be over by Christmas. Little could they know just how wrong they were. By November 1918, ten million people had died and the political map of the world had been re-drawn. Caught up in the middle of the chaos were millions of ordinary men, women and children. Their very lives changed in ways they could never have imagined - this is their story. The centenary of the outbreak of World War I is fast approaching. This is not the time for yet another film about battles fought and governments toppled, but for a radical new approach to historical documentary. The Great War Diary will retell the story of the greatest war mankind had ever seen in a unique way - it will let viewers experience World War I solely through the eyes of those who lived it. From over 1000 very dramatic stories of the war, left behind in diaries, letters, postcards and telegrams, we have chosen the 14 most vivid and emotional from around the globe.

The year 1913 was a time of transformation when Ottoman rule in Palestine was still strong, the personal identities of people living there were fluid and overlapping, and few could imagine the conflict that would dominate the region for most of the next century. Seeds of Conflict focuses on the period just before World War I, when Arab and Jewish nationalism first made contact and the conflict was just beginning to germinate.

"Enjoy the war, for the peace will be savage", was apparently a macabre joke circulating in the German military towards the end of World War II. This documentary shows us just how prescient it would prove, charting the cruelties that would follow the end of conflict. Man's inhumanity to man would continue long after the war itself had formally ended.
