In Germany, 1945 with the surrender of the German Reich, the questions surrounding the post-war order, the victorious powers' spheres of influence, and of course, the atomic bomb. The bomb would shape the lives of the entire world community over the next four decades: the technological arms race, the fear of eradicating the entire human race, and nuclear destruction would be burned into people's minds and have an influence on all areas of human life. From 1945 onwards, the two superpowers start their struggle to impose their ideological influence on the world. On the one hand, the democratic market economy of the US and, on the other, the communist, planned economy of the USSR. Follow the major events and incidents that addressed the question of what system is best, what system would prevail. When in 1957 the Soviets successfully launch Sputnik 1, the first artificial Earth satellite, the race for supremacy also begins in space. Only in 1969, with the perfectly organised US lunar mission, the two super powers are on a par with each other. From the beginning of the Cold War conflict, Germany is the major ideological battlefield for the Soviets and the Americans as they try to win over the hearts and minds of the German people in the eastern and western part of the divided country.

Tony and the Team join a group of archaeologists as they dig the site of William Shakespeare's house, New Place, in Stratford-upon-Avon. There's little of it above ground now, but records show it was Tudor Stratford's biggest private home, with up to 20 rooms and a dozen servants. However, in 1702, New Place was demolished to make way for a grand Georgian pile. That Georgian house sat right on the street, so for the last hundred years or more, it's been assumed that it was also the site of New Place. But a recently discovered document casts doubt on that theory. With the site now accessible, the archaeologists aim to show for the first time not only where Shakespeare really did live with his family but also how grand his house was. And that raises two intriguing questions about Shakespeare: Why did he want such a grand home? And where on earth did he get the money from?
