Most Australians do not know what happened on this tragic ship - and most have never heard of the Montevideo Maru. This documentary will change that. In terms of loss of life this tragic event is Australia's greatest ever maritime disaster. It resulted in the death of over 1000 fine young Australian men. They were Prisoners of War locked in the hold of the Montevideo Maru and drowned when this little known Japanese prison ship was torpedoed on July 1, 1942, by the American submarine USS Sturgeon off the coast of the Philippines. This special pays homage to this uncelebrated tragic event and its unsung victims.
