Casualties of war rage beyond the battlefield. As the ranks of women in the American military swell, so do incidents of rape. We use it to heat, cool and light up our cities, to power our cars and fly our planes. In 1980, the average American home contained three electronic devices, today each has over 25. Most of that energy comes from burning coal, oil, and gas. So, with demand predicted to triple by the end of the century, how we get the energy our world needs, in a way that won't threaten it, is a huge challenge.

This is the story of what happens when an ordinary Australian journalist is transplanted into the Middle East by the reverberations of 9/11 and embarks on a journey that courses through the deepest recesses of the Iraq war. Michael Ware found himself launched into the Middle East after the seismic geopolitical upheaval of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Reporting for CNN and Time, he set his sights on ruthless insurrectionist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the man who founded al-Qaeda in Iraq. Constructed from seven years of reporting, and featuring harrowing first-person footage of combat, we not only captures the shocking rise of al-Zarqawi but how the war affects soldiers and civilians, states and individuals, revealing a darkness within us all. Directed by Ware and two-time Academy Award-winning US documentarian Bill Guttentag, we expose the distressing realities of far-flung conflict, which is so often depicted as a sea of sand and infrared blips.
