The struggle for control in this vital theatre of World War II gave the conflict some of its most compelling and powerful stories. The great battle between the Italian Navy and Britain's vastly outnumbered Royal Navy dominated the seas during the early years of the war as both sides sought to support the land campaigns in Egypt and East Africa. At the same time, Britain struggled to maintain its toehold on Malta to ensure that the French fleet did not fall into the hands of the Axis powers. This episode also explores the story of the war in Greece, which was invaded by the Italians in 1940, the Germans in 1941 and finally by the British in 1944. It looks at the constant fight against the German Luftwaffe, which arrived in the Mediterranean in 1941 and did terrible damage to Allied shipping, resulting on the loss of bases in North Africa. The programme also delves into the fascinating story of Operation Mercury, German invasion of Crete, the bloody battle which cost more than 10,000 lives and of the fight for the island of Sicily in 1943, which saw the miraculous evacuation of some 100,000 Axis troops.

In a war infamous for its military disasters, there were few greater debacles than Gallipoli. Ill-conceived, poorly planned and dogged by misfortune, the offensive which was supposed to knock Turkey out of the Great War soon subsided into a bloody stalemate. As a result, places such as Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay are written large in military folklore.

As the Civil Rights Movement grew into a force in the 1960s, the Ku Klux Klan, dormant for decades, re-emerged with a vengeance. Born in Tennessee following the Civil War, the KKK had conducted an intense campaign of intimidation throughout the South before quickly fading out during Reconstruction. It was reborn at Stone Mountain, Georgia in the 1920s, sparked by the release of the epic film Birth of a Nation. Though its membership grew to four million, the Klan again lost its mass support and political clout within a decade. That the Klan came back for a third time wasn't surprising-but where that reincarnation took place was. Klansville, US. is an exploration of why North Carolina, long seen as the most progressive state in the South, became home to the largest Klan organisation in the country, with more members than all the other Southern states combined during the 1960s.

In the early hours of June 6, 1944, Allied forces began the greatest military assault ever attempted. They came to Normandy by both air and sea, with one objective: to get a toe-hold on the continent, and from there, begin the long campaign that would result in the liberation of Europe and the end of the World War II. The assault was conducted in two phases: an airborne attack by 24,000 paratroopers and glider pilots, followed by an amphibious landing across Normandy's sandy beaches. Using personal testimonies, we tell the dramatic stories of the men who took part: the British and American paratroopers and glider infantry, men who crewed tanks, infantry soldiers who were deposited on the Normandy beaches by landing craft and RAF crews who took part in the deception plan, that deceived Hitler and his generals into believing that Calais was the main target for the assault. The veterans words are illustrated by dramatic archive, and colour footage of key locations. By telling their stories in their own words, we get a snapshot of what it was like to be part of the enormous undertaking.

Princess Elizabeth grew up in the Piccadilly home of her parents, the Duke and Duchess of York. The Abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII, in 1936 appeared to be a catastrophe to her family, catapulting her nervous father onto the throne as King George VI. Elizabeth became heir to the throne aged 10, and seemed to be a shy girl with a limited education. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in British history, but she was neither born nor educated to take on that role. At the age of 10 her life was turned upside down, when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated, catapulting her into the position of heir to the greatest empire the world had ever seen. At the age of 21, she broadcast to the people of Britain and the Commonwealth that her whole life would be devoted to service - a pledge she renewed 60 years later at her diamond jubilee. As monarch she has appointed 13 prime ministers, from Sir Winston Churchill to Teresa May, and despite the best efforts of some politicians she has kept above the political fray. Her greatest achievement has been to transform the British Empire into the new Commonwealth of diverse and independent nations. During her reign she has experienced family tragedy and triumph, often having to choose between supporting her family and doing her duty as monarch. This eight-part series interviews the Queen's prime ministers, members of the royal household and closest friends, to build a uniquely personal picture of Elizabeth, the woman, the mother, the Queen.
