President Trump/Hijab Day/Terms and Confusion/School of the Air/Farm Living/BTN Investigates President Trump Over the holidays, Donald Trump was inaugurated as the President of the United States. And in the weeks since, his decisions have made headlines around the world. The reason he’s been able to make so many big calls in such a short time is because he has a special power that many other leaders don’t have - Executive Orders. We’ll find out all about them next week. Hijab Day Over the holidays, the Muslim religion was in the news a lot too. While some of that attention focused on Donald Trump’s recent visa restrictions for people from some Muslim nations, in Australian there was also controversy around an Australia Day billboard featuring two girls wearing hijabs. The 1st of February was World Hijab Day, so we asked one young girl to tell us what a hijab is and why she wears one. TEACHING RESOURCES INCLUDED Learning Areas Health and Physical Education: Describe how respect, empathy and valuing diversity can positively influence relationships Years 3 and 4 Civics and Citizenship / Knowledge and Understanding / Citizenship, diversity and identity: How a person’s identity can be shaped by the different cultural, religious and/or social groups to which they may belong Year 4 Civics and Citizenship / Civics and Citizenship Skills / Communication and reflection: Reflect on their cultural identity and how it might be similar and different from others Year 4 Civics and Citizenship / Knowledge and Understanding / Citizenship, diversity and identity: How Australia is a secular nation and a multi-faith society Year 7 How values, including freedom, respect, inclusion, civility, responsibility, compassion, equality and a ‘fair go’, can promote cohesion within Australian society Year 7 Terms and Confusion Many kids use social media sites like Instagram and snapchat. But did you know they are all not allowed to be used by people under 13? That is just one of the rules written in the terms and conditions that you agree to when you install them. But experts say there is no way kids could read let alone understand all of the things they are signing up to, so they are campaigning for them to be simplified. TEACHING RESOURCES INCLUDED Learning Areas: Digital Technologies Processes and Production Skills: Plan, create and communicate ideas and information independently and with others, applying agreed ethical and social protocols Years 3 and 4 Plan, create and communicate ideas and information, including collaboratively online, applying agreed ethical, social and technical protocols Years 5 and 6 Plan and manage projects that create and communicate ideas and information collaboratively online, taking safety and social contexts into account Years 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education / Personal, Social and Community Health / Being healthy, safe and active: Identify and practise strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 ABC ‘Back to School’ feature: School of the Air Most Australian students have now returned to school for another year. But for the kids in this story, that experience was very different. They live on a remote property in Queensland, so their classes are actually held in a small building next to their home. We asked them to explain what it’s like to do all of your lessons over the net and how their school day is different to yours. Farm Living A young girl has found a fun way to teach people about what it's like to live on a farm. She and her Dad record parody songs and upload them to YouTube. And they've been getting heaps of attention. We invited Aimee to tell you all about it. BTN Investigates Have you seen or heard something in the news you'd like explained?
