Budget 2017 - Good vs Bad Debt: Next week, the federal Government will announce what it would like to do with the country's money. But in the lead-up, there's been a lot of talk about debt. The treasurer says he'd like people to remember that not all debt is bad debt. So next week we'll find out when spending money you don't have could be a good thing. War on Waste Special - Fashion Waste: Each year, Australians generate a huge amount of waste. So this month, the ABC is tackling this issue with a series called 'War on Waste'. And over the next few shows, we'll look at a few ways kids can cut down on the waste they produce. This week we're focusing on fashion waste. TEACHING RESOURCES INCLUDED Learning Areas: Geography / Knowledge and Understanding: The use and management of natural resources and waste, and the different views on how to do this sustainably Year 4 HASS / Inquiry and skills / Evaluating and reflecting: Reflect on learning to propose actions in response to an issue or challenge and consider possible effects of proposed actions Year 4 Science / Science as a Human Endeavour / Use and influence of science: Science knowledge helps people to understand the effect of their actions Year 4 Scientific knowledge is used to solve problems and inform personal and community decisions Years 5 and 6 Design and Technologies / Processes and Production Skills: Evaluate design ideas, processes and solutions based on criteria for success developed with guidance and including care for the environment Years 3 and 4 Design and Technologies / Knowledge and Understanding: Examine how people in design and technologies occupations address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services, and environments for current and future use Years 5 and 6 Blood Donation The Red Cross has come up with a new way to encourage people to donate blood more regularly. It's introducing a text message system that will let each donor know where their blood is being used. So we thought we'd trial the new system with help from BTN reporter and regular plasma donor Nic. We'll also find out how blood gets from you to the person who needs it. TEACHING RESOURCES INCLUDED Learning Areas: Science / Science as a Human Endeavour / Use and influence of science: Scientific understandings, discoveries and inventions are used to solve problems that directly affect peoples' lives Years 5 and 6 Solutions to contemporary issues that are found using science and technology, may impact on other areas of society and may involve ethical considerations Year 7 Eagle Hunter Next week you'll also meet a young girl from Mongolia who, like most kids, goes to school, hangs with her friends and helps out with chores around the house. But on the weekends, she heads into the mountains to learn how to hunt with a trained eagle. Learn more about this amazing ancient practice and the culture it comes from. Bottle Message Imagine walking along a beach and finding a message in a bottle that had drifted there from thousands of kilometres away. Sound like something out of a movie? Well that happened to a young Aussie kid recently. We helped him track down who threw it in the ocean in the first place.
