The China Syndrome It’s no secret that Australia’s relationship with China is as complicated as it is fragile. On the one hand, China is the key to our economic prosperity, so if we want to be rich we need to embrace the Chinese. On the other hand, there’s no question we have a fear of China’s expanding influence, and we don’t want them getting too close. Which is why what is happening in the South Pacific is causing growing concern. Somewhat arrogantly, Australia has always considered it our “patch of paradise” to protect and nurture. But now the Chinese are moving in and splashing their cash in places like Fiji and Vanuatu. So what’s next? Tom Steinfort investigates claims the Chinese may ultimately be planning to build military bases right on our doorstep. Fake News For millions of tourists visiting Australia the boomerang and the didgeridoo are iconic and highly sought after symbols of our indigenous culture. But unbelievably, most didgeridoos and boomerangs are now made in Indonesia, in Bali specifically, not here in Australia. It’s not because there’s a thriving expatriate Aboriginal community living up there, it’s all about money. Indonesian workers can churn out cheap copies of our artefacts by the shipload. And that’s very attractive for the businesses involved, which are happy to exploit or disrespect 40,000 years of culture in the pursuit of cashing in on gullible tourists. Taken - Update It is one of the most bizarre crimes 60 Minutes has ever encountered: the abduction last July of 20-year-old glamour model Chloe Ayling. She says she was snatched off a street in Milan and kept hostage in a remote Italian farmhouse while her kidnappers arranged to auction her off as a sex slave to the highest bidder. Chloe’s escape from this terrifying ordeal was so extraordinary that many accused her of making the whole story up – an elaborate publicity stunt for fame and fortune. Earlier this week a judge in an Italian court had his say, and as Liam Bartlett reports, the intrigue continues.

Manchester Attack Next week on BTN, we'll give kids a safe overview of what happened in Manchester and what's now being done to try to stop it happening again. We'll also take a close look at all of the good things people did to help in the hours and days after such a horrible event. Recognition Convention More than 200 Indigenous delegates from around the country are gathering in Uluru this week to discuss Recognition. That's the name given to the push to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian constitution. But what will that change actually mean? We'll bring you all of the info from this important event in central Australia. Suing Trump A nine-year old American kid is part of a group of young people currently suing US President Donald Trump over his environmental policies. We talk to him to find out what he's worried about and why he's decided to take the President to court to try to fix it. Marn Grook Footy A researcher has uncovered evidence that Aussie Rules football could have been influenced by a traditional Indigenous game called Marn Grook. Marn Grook has been played for thousands of years and bears a striking resemblance to the modern game we see on our TV screens each weekend. We take a closer look at the similarities and differences between them.

The BTN Kids' Happiness Survey is now open! As we revealed last week, the BTN Kids' Happiness Survey is now open! So please encourage your class to jump onto our website to have their say. We're working with experts from the University of Melbourne this year. They will help us interpret the results and use them as part their international research into children's lives. It'll only take about 6 minutes to complete and all answers are anonymous. You have until the 22nd of September to have your say! Australia Day Debate Over the past few weeks, a couple of local councils have confirmed that they have cancelled their Australia Day celebrations for 2018. ABC radio station Triple J has also recently released a survey asking people what they think of moving the date of their 'Hottest 100' music countdown from the 26th of January. It's all because of the negative feelings Australia's Indigenous people have towards this date. But the Prime Minister says he strongly disagrees with the push to move it. We'll recap both sides of this debate so you can decide where you stand. Threatened Species Day Next week is National Threatened Species week. It's the perfect time to learn about the challenges faced by different species around the world. So next week, we're going to meet some of the rangers tasked with protecting animals from poachers in Cambodia. But as we'll learn, it's not just the animals who are in danger there. Rock-climbing Rock climbing is going to feature in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo for the first time. Fourteen-year old Leah is one of the rock-climbing athletes leading the way for Australia internationally. We asked her to tell us more about this sport - just as she's getting ready to compete for gold at the World Youth Championships.
