This is the story of the greatest war of world history, of men and encounters that cast huge shadows across time. In this 13-part series we examine the events and personalities that drove World War II. In part one of this series we look at the legacy of Versailles and the League of Nations and their impact on events to come. The Versailles Conference and Treaty supposedly ended World War I; the guarantee of peace was the punishment and weakening of Germany. This humiliation would fuel the fire of one man's ambition to exact revenge - Adolf Hitler. When Hitler came to power in 1933 he did so on a wave of anti-Versailles feeling, assuring the German people that he would destroy the slave treaty of Versailles and once again make Germany a great power. With the impotence of the League of Nations further illustrated by their failure to act against Italy's invasion of Ethiopia and Japan's subsequent war on China, Hitler realised there was nothing to stop his plans for German rearmament and expansion. In 1938 he announced his plans to annexe Austria. With this country now in his pocket the way was clear for Hitler to move on to his next target - Czechoslovakia. As 1938 drew to a close Britain's Prime Minister was talking of appeasement, whilst a lone voice in Parliament, Winston Churchill, was warning the world about the coming dangers of Nazism.

This is the story of a world where territories and own frontiers were built by the slave trade. A world where violence, subjugation and profit imposed their routes. The history of slavery did not begin in the cotton fields. It is a much older tragedy that has been going on since the dawn of humanity. From the 7th century on, and for over 1200 years, Africa was the epicentre of a gigantic traffic of human beings traversing the entire globe: Nubian, Fulani, Mandinka, Songhai, Susu, Akan, Yoruba, Igbo, Kongo, Yao and Somali. Over 20 million Africans were deported, sold and enslaved. This criminal system thrived, laying the foundations of empires around the world. Its scale was such that for a long time, it has been impossible to relate it comprehensively. And yet, it raises a fundamental question: how did Africa end up at the heart of the slavery routes?

This is the inspiring story of a former police officer's quest to find the man who enslaved a 13-year-old Thai girl in a Sydney brothel. Ning was 13 when she was trafficked to Australia from Thailand and sold to a Sydney brothel. In 2007, she became the first slave in history to win victim of crime compensation when she was awarded $50,000 by the Attorney General's Department of NSW for the multiple child rapes committed against her in 1995. This groundbreaking decision set an important precedent for the millions of sex slaves globally. But the Australian man who imprisoned Ning for 10 days and who forced her to have sex with over 100 men was never arrested.

This is the story of Honore de Balzac, the remarkable French novelist whose greatest work was written during a time of turmoil and division between the conservative and revolutionary factions of post-Napoleonic France. Balzac's miserable childhood was followed by a life blighted by illness and debt and perhaps it was this more than anything that encouraged a phenomenal work rate and output? Some 85 novels in 20 years. Quantity however did not compromise quality and such works as Les Derniers Chouans, Le Pere Goriot, Les Illusions Perdue and Les Paysans have become classics which have been translated into many languages.
