Director Serge Viallet recounts such events as the invasion of China in 1931, the Pacific War from 1942, the conditions of surrender in 1945, followed by the forced reconstruction at under the authority of the victorious Americans.

The Japanese began to ask themselves many questions concerning issues like foreign occupation, individual and collective silences surrounding the 15 years of conflict. There was a slow and progressive repatriation of 6.5 million civilians and military dispersed over the former occupied territories, amidst devastation of most cities.
