It's a hot summer's day in Rome 1600, the year of the Jubilee. The entire Eternal City is a construction site: streets are full of scaffolding, dust clouds, loose cobblestones, the continuous banging of hammers and rasping of saws, carpenters with Lombard accents, errand boys shouting across the streets in Roman dialect, stevedores unloading barrels and crates from boats along the Tiber. The narrow streets in the town centre are full of jostling tourists and monsignors rushing to get somewhere, and every once in a while the crowd parts to let a sedan chair or carriage of a cardinal through.

Where do we start when we want to talk about such a famous painting as Velazquez Las Meninas? There is an incredibly huge bibliography on this painting, to the point that it is almost utopian to think or hope we can document ourselves on everything in and about it. From the late 1800s to the early 2000s, dozens of books have come out all over the world specifically and solely devoted to this one, single painting.

Critic and art historian Andrew Graham-Dixon travels from southern to northern Spain to tell the story of some of Europe's most exciting and vital art. He journeys to the country's scorched centre to explore Spanish art of the 16th and 17th centuries. From the mystical world of El Greco to the tender genius of Velazquez, this was a moment so extraordinary it became known as the Golden Age. But beneath the glittering surface was a dark and savage heart. Travelling from the architectural jewel of Toledo to majestic Madrid, Graham-Dixon traces the rise and fall of the Spanish Empire, the brutal conquest of the New World and the religious madness of the Inquisition, to discover how a history so violent could produce some of the most beautiful art ever seen.
