The talent arrive in Bangladesh in the middle of a four-day strike by garment workers - the streets are chaotic and violence could erupt at any time. They're going to be working in the cotton fields at a place called Tangail and for the four-hour drive from Dhaka to Tangail the five have a police escort. The group stay on a tea plantation in the highlands, established by British tea planters in the 1800's. Their first job on the estate is to work as tea pluckers. Traditionally a woman's job, some children as young as fourteen are forced to follow their mothers into the tea fields because they have no other option.
The five young Kiwis' first assignment in Sri Lanka is to mine for gems. Many of the gems mined in this country are exported overseas to countries like New Zealand. To get to the mine the five must cross a river on a flimsy raft - on the other side they're met by Gamini, the owner of the gem mine.
The five are back in Manila as they visit a company which produces costume jewellery for the international market. The owner tells them the jewellery is locally designed and made by outworkers in rural villages. The group travels to one of the villages and work alongside the people making the jewellery where they see how hard life is for the people living here.
After a two hour drive from Manila, the group arrives at a banana and pineapple plantation where they will be put to work. Peter, Kieran, Anna and Stevie welcome the opportunity to do some physical work but Stephanie isn't used to doing manual labour and doesn't want to get her new shoes dirty so she struggles to plant even one tree.
Reality Trip takes five adolescents to three different countries to expose them to people and situations they've never before encountered in their Western lives. In each country they work and live alongside locals, with the full cultural immersion proving to be a life changing experience for each of them, altering their outlook on life.
