Catalyst: Shark Repellent/Nun's Plight/Facial Recognition/Physics On The Street: Weightlessness
Catalyst: Shark Repellent/Nun's Plight/Facial Recognition/Physics On The Street: Weightlessness
Graham discovers how a better understanding of sharks' sensory systems may lead to a way to swim in safety amongst sharks, and Maryanne looks at how the contraceptive pill could lower the risk of some reproductive cancers.

SHARK REPELLENT

In Western Australia, shark attacks recently and over the last decade demonstrate that, although small, the risk of attack is ever present to those who work or play in shark-inhabited waters. Is it possible to develop a shark repellent of some kind? Researchers at UWA are on the case. Graham Phillips discovers how a better understanding of sharks' sensory systems may lead to a way to swim in safety amongst sharks.

NUN'S PLIGHT

When a nun devotes her life to the church, she makes a commitment to poverty, obedience and chastity. But is a life of celibacy bad for your health? Nuns are at an increased risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. Maryanne Demasi reveals that while nuns are reluctantly in the limelight, any women who doesn't have children shares the same elevated risks. New research shows that the contraceptive pill could substantially lower the risk of some reproductive cancers by controlling the menstrual cycle. But just how safe is it to use the pill for something beyond its intended use?

FACIAL RECOGNITION

Just about everything we do these days, we're being watched. Cameras are everywhere. But just how useful are they in identifying individuals to perhaps help solve a crime? Trawling through grainy, low resolution footage in the hope of pinning down a suspect by comparing the image to a database of faces can take hours and possibly deliver zero results. Researchers at the University of Queensland believe they've cracked the problem. For the first time, low quality CCTV footage can be used to identify individuals from databases and even find and track people as they move around an area. Anja Taylor challenges the team to pick her face in a crowd and questions the impact the technology may have on privacy.

PHYSICS ON THE STREET: WEIGHTLESSNESS

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut floating around the space station? But why are the astronauts floating? Derek Muller takes to the street and discovers that many make the same incorrect assumption.
