Then The Wind Changed
Then The Wind Changed
*Coarse Language*

On 7 February 2009, Australia suffered its worst natural disaster in recorded history. One hundred and seventy-three people died when a series of uncontrollable bush fires swept across the state of Victoria. The next day, the headlines pronounced the small rural hamlet of Strathewen, only 40 kilometres from Melbourne, 'The Valley of Death'.

The fires of Black Saturday hit Strathewen with an unparalleled ferocity, and the scale of destruction was overwhelming. Strathewen's small community suffered the highest concentration of loss of life, environment and property in the state. Survivors were linked by trauma, unimaginable grief and the weighty task of trying to understand what had happened to their worlds. There was no roadmap for recovery from a disaster of this size and no instruction manual on how to respond. After the shock of survival, just as the adrenalin finally ran dry, the real work began.

Director Celeste Geer interweaves her own family's story with the experiences of five other families and individuals from Strathewen in an intimate exploration of post disaster recovery. Through a combination of compelling home movie footage and observational material, Then The Wind Changed documents the extraordinary spectrum of human responses to the firestorm that swept through one valley. And from this delicate observation of destruction and loss, comes a quiet meditation on what it means to belong.
