Ageing (Theme Pack)
A compilation of five programs around the topic of Ageing. Programs include:
CUTTING EDGE: LIVING OLD
Living Old is a documentary revealing that America's fastest growing segment of the population is 85 years and over. It looks at how advanced medical procedures are enabling us to live longer, but not necessarily better.
ANDREW JENKS: ROOM 335
Just like the other residents at the assisted living facility Harbor Place, Andrew Jenks played bingo, hung out in the courtyards contemplating 'the golden years', and even helped fellow neighbours change their oxygen tanks. However, unlike Tammy (age 95) or even Bill (age 80), he is only nineteen years old. For a summer he moved into a senior residence in Florida, into room 335. For one summer he did all of the things that old people do. He wanted to find the answer to the question: how do they feel now that they face the end of their lives?
FOUR CORNERS: END OF THE LINE
With more and more Australians living longer the task of finding quality care for people who can't look after themselves is getting tougher. The Federal Government says that Australia has a first rate system which looks after its most senior citizens, but is that really the case? Reporter Wendy Carlisle talks to four families about their struggle to find quality care for their loved ones. They tell how their parents were mistreated, how serious illnesses were ignored and how the complaints procedure, that is supposed to protect patients, did not properly investigate cases or refused to acknowledge significant evidence of negligence.
BABY BOOM TO BUST (MISSING CHILDREN AND GREY TSUNAMI)
The two-part series, Baby Boom to Bust addresses one of the biggest issues of our time: global ageing. The world has hit an extraordinary turning point. For the first time in history old people outnumber the young on our planet. Today, one in every ten persons is over 60. By 2050 it will be one out of five - over two billion people. In some developed countries there are so many elderly and so few births that the population is actually dying off. And in parts of the developing world, the numbers of old people are growing at an even more astounding rate. (STUDY GUIDE AVAILABLE)
THE AGEING FILES
We all think we know what ageing is, but it's actually surprisingly difficult to pin down. In this program, a 70-year old fashion model and her 17-year old grand-daughter take part in scientific test to see whether it is possible to distinguish between them. The results give an insight into what contemporary science can tell us about what happens when we age at the molecular, genetic, cellular, physiological and psychological level.
