Face Painting with Bill Leak is a six-part series which will take viewers on an amazing journey as renowned cartoonist and portrait painter Bill Leak paints six well-known Australians.

Most people know Bill Leak as one of Australia's leading satirists via his day job as The Australian's daily editorial cartoonist. But he is also a highly respected portrait painter, who equally divides his time between ridiculing his subjects mercilessly in his cartoons and immortalising them in oils.

As with any portrait, the first thing an artist must do is find the soul of the subject. Face Painting follows Bill on this journey of discovery each week as he attempts to find the real person he's about to commit to canvas.

Over each episode Bill will build a very personal picture of the subject he's trying to capture on canvas and give us an insight into the detailed process of portraiture - just how difficult it is to 'capture' that essence on canvas.

In Face Painting this process is even harder for Bill as his subjects are no longer with us. The six Australian legends he will paint are Pro Hart, June Salter, Bon Scott, Charlie Perkins, Tilly Devine and Boy Charlton. What would they have been like if they had actually been sitting for the portrait?

Using archival vision and photos, interviews with friends and family, Bill will immerse himself in his subject's world. He'll visit their favourite places, participate in their favourite pastimes. He wants to understand the essence of his subject.

At the end of the show, Bill will reveal to the TV audience and the subject's family and friends his portrait. Will they like it or hate it?

In the first episode Bill's subject is Pro Hart and he travels to Broken Hill to meet with Pro's son John and his wife Raylene, plus his old mates from the Ulysses Motorcycle Club. He also talks to Pro's close friend the Rev Fred Nile.
