Rituals: Around The World In 80 Faiths - The Indian Sub Continent, Ep 6 Of 8
Every day, around the world, strange - and sometimes shocking - rituals take place. Rituals: Around the World in 80 Faiths is an ambitious and exhaustive guide to the lengths human societies go to get in touch with the spiritual world.
Anglican vicar Pete Owen Jones takes a year long journey of epic proportions as he travels the world to explore the shocking, bizarre and often dangerous rituals practised by some of the world's major religions and tribes.
Arriving in time for each festival, he meets the practitioners of the faith, attempts to understand their beliefs and immerses himself in their astonishing religious ceremonies.
Episode 6 - The Indian Subcontinent
Peter travels from the Nepalese Himalayas to the south of India to make sense of the mystery of Indian religions. He finds out about the transmigration of the soul, karma, the pantheon of the gods and the high regard for gurus.
He visits a Tibetan Buddhist monastery high in the mountains. In Calcutta, he takes part in the colourful Durga Puja festival and meets the Agori who live amongst the dead. He then travels to the deserts of Rajastan, where he finds Hindu sects ready to walk on fire or even pay the ultimate price for their gurus.
In Mumbai, he attends a Zoroastran marriage and investigates why one of the world's oldest religions is in danger of disappearing. He discovers how Sikhism had a violent birth as he attends the 300th anniversary of its greatest guru's death, and then journeys south to learn about Jainism, a faith which renounces violence against every living creature. Finally, he spends Diwali in a tiny village at a dung-slinging festival, with inevitable results. (From the UK, in English and Hindi, English subtitles) (Documentary Series) (Part 6 of 8) PG CC WS
