David Hockney: A Bigger Picture

British artist David Hockney leaves his California home for the last 25 years to return to his native Yorkshire to paint the English countryside.

Filmmaker Bruno Wollheim follows him in an unprecedented journey over three years as he changes direction in his work in his 70th year. Hockney reinvents his whole approach to painting after an absence from it of six years, and for the first time allows the camera to follow him at work.

The film is part road-movie, part intimate portrait of an artist reinvigorating himself after running on empty artistically and personally. After his dogs and many friends had died, the deathbed wish of a Yorkshire friend and his mother's passing reignited a desire to go back to his childhood haunts and capture the unique beauty of its landscape.
