Law And Disorder: Andrew Wilkie - The Perfect Whistleblower, Ep 1 Of 3
A three part documentary series delving deep into the murky world of government misconduct, crime, corruption and the ordinary citizens who try to expose it all.
Through extraordinary first person narratives, Law and Disorder is a blow-by-blow account of what happens when whistleblowers take on the authorities.
The series is broadcast at a time when the Government is considering a parliamentary committee report on whistleblower reform chaired by Labor's Mark Dreyfus QC, whose recommendations have been criticised by the lobby group Whisteblowers Australia as "inadequate".
The first episode is the story of Andrew Wilkie, the only Western intelligence officer to speak out before the 2003 invasion of Iraq. His decision to resign and openly challenge the government had serious ramifications for him and his family. This program examines what happened to Wilkie in the six years after that extraordinary event.
The subject of episode two, Allan Kessing, has fought for years to clear his name, after he says he was wrongly convicted of leaking customs reports to the media about major security flaws at Sydney airport. He claims he was the victim of a revenge campaign by the former Government and bureaucracy. Kessing has sent himself broke fighting to restore his name. Now a convicted criminal, he is an example of how the system is determined to discourage whistleblowing no matter what the cost.
The final episode profiles three whistleblowers who took on the authorities. A policeman caught in the world of organised crime and corrupt cops at the height of the Underbelly era, Simon Illingworth, spoke out to save his life. Jeffery Simpson predicted the fall of HIH Insurance. He was discouraged or ignored by all the regulatory bodies - and nearly prosecuted himself in officialdom's panicky response when the scale of the disaster became known. Queensland nurse Karen Smith has led an unremitting campaign to protect fragile elderly patients in the state's nursing homes from mistreatment and even sexual abuse, which has seen her sacked, despite the truth of her accusations.
EPISODE 1 - Andrew Wilkie
In 2003, Wilkie resigned his post as a senior intelligence analyst at the Office of National Assessments in order to openly challenge the government's justification for going to war with Iraq. His conviction to 'do the right thing' cost him his career but his revelations of how the government distorted intelligence to falsely claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction have been borne out over time.
Wilkie now lives in Tasmania where he is planning to run for State Parliament next year. (Commissioned by SBS in English) (Documentary Series) CC WS
