Moolaade
Moolaade
Moolaade is a confronting film developed around the theme of female circumcision. Written and directed by renowned African filmmaker, Ousmane Sembene, Moolaade is a sensitive and engaging exploration of the implications of a challenge to this practice, still the norm in at least thirty-four nations of the world.

Set in the small African village of Djerisso, in Burkina Faso, the film explores a range of themes including the roles of men and women in a traditional society, the importance of culture and the clash of traditional and modern values, as well as the central issue of the consequences of female circumcision, or 'female genital excision' as it is more accurately described.

It also examines the impact of outside (mainly Western) influences on village life, and recognizes the fact that even the most isolated village is not immune from the technologies and values of modern life. Moolaade is a film that would be suitable for upper secondary and tertiary students of Women's Studies, English, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Ethics, Social Studies, Politics, Film Studies and Psychology.

Despite the confronting nature of its central theme, it is a beautiful, often humorous and generally uplifting film. Despite tragedies along the way, it could be said to have a happy ending. It explores universal themes about courage, supporting one's beliefs and being prepared to face ostracism and even violence for standing up for what is right. The film also offers insights into the community life of an African village.
