EnhanceTV :: Study Guides :: A Wedding In Ramallah

A Wedding In Ramallah
A Wedding In Ramallah
The guide could be relevant to a range of topics and subject areas, particularly Studies of Society and Environment and key learning areas of English, Personal Development courses, Media, History and Cultural Studies, Legal Studies and Religious Education, Politics, Peace Studies, Futures Studies, Justice Studies and Human Services. It is suitable for Upper Secondary level and above. It would also be useful for community groups working for reconciliation and community understanding.

It is unlikely that the language in this film would shock most adolescents; however some schools may not wish students to be exposed to it. Some abusive words are used by the men who have picked up English in America. Some of the incidental scenes of fighting may be distressing to some students, particularly those who may have come from a background of conflict.

A Wedding in Ramallah is a compelling account of the dramatic events surrounding the wedding of a Palestinian couple and an exploration of life under occupation for ordinary Palestinians.

It tells the story of a Palestinian man, Bassam, who returns home from America to find a "home-made bride".

Bassam's family introduces him to Mariam, a traditional village girl, and two weeks later they are married. The wedding turns out to be just the start of a remarkable drama, full of twists and turns.

Soon after the wedding a new intifada breaks out, and the Palestinian Territories are engulfed in violence. The film shows Mariam stuck at her in-laws' house in the middle of a war-zone, as she attempts to join Bassam in America.

The final part of the story follows Mariam's arrival in America, and her dawning realisation that a life in exile is no life at all.

For a Western audience who often place the Arab-Israeli conflict in the too-hard basket, A Wedding in Ramallah offers a window into the domestic world of the Palestinians, giving the conflict a human face.
