Louis XIV, who for political reasons married the daughter of the Spanish King, believed his mistresses were so vital to sustaining his power that he went against the church and public opinion. Mistress Of The Sun King looks at Madame de Montespan, the Sun King's first official mistress.

Montespan was attacked by the queen and church for her position and was ultimately brought down by her closest friend and child minder, Mademoiselle de Maintenon through gossip and slander.
