Compass: Judah And Mohammad

What is it like to grow up in the shadow of military conflict and occupation? Judah and Mohammad closely follows 18 months in the lives of two 15-year-old boys - one Israeli, and one Palestinian.

Despite the fact the boys only live 30 kilometres from each other they will never meet, as cameras follow them into their separate lives at home, with friends, and at school, to present a confronting insight into the lives of the two teenagers, whose countries are at war.

Life can get pretty complicated for a fifteen-year-old in Israel. Judah lives at home where increasing social and economic pressures take their toll on his mother as she struggles to raise him and his younger brother and sister. Not only that, but Judah can't even go to school in the morning without fear of being blown up in a terrorist attack. The effects of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict invade every aspect of his life - even during the class history lesson. Like all other teenagers, after school, he must serve three years in the Israeli army.

As a 15-year-old Palestinian, occupation is all Mohammad knows. Keen to get involved in the national resistance, and with equal encouragement from his family, Mohammad is arrested, beaten and imprisoned for seven days after participating in a protest against the construction of Israel's security barrier/separation wall. Despite the traumatic experience, his efforts have earnt him the respect of his family, school and peers for becoming a 'true man' and 'martyr'.
