Welcome to EnhanceTV THIS WEEK - your Australian educational TV Guide.

EnhanceTV This Week is proudly brought to you by Screenrights.

First Australians - free screenings!

First Australians - Six years in the making, this multi platform project is the most ambitious to be undertaken on Indigenous Australia. The series First Australians chronicles the birth of contemporary Australia as never told before, from the perspective of its first people. First Australians explores what unfolds when the oldest living culture in the world is overrun by the world's greatest empire. Over seven documentaries, First Australians depicts the true stories of individuals - both black and white - caught in an epic drama of friendship, revenge, loss and victory in Australia's most transformative period of history. We begin in 1788 in Sydney, with the friendship between an Englishmen (Governor Phillip) and a warrior (Bennelong) and end our tale in 1993 with Koiki Mabo's legal challenge to the foundation of Australia. First Australians chronicles the collision of two worlds and the genesis of a new nation.

Free screenings for teachers and lecturers and their partners only, will be shown around Australia during September. Book now through Metro Magazine. First Australians will broadcast on SBS later this year.

ANGELS AND DEMONS (Screened in 2008 on ABC1)

What does it feel like to lose your mind and can you get it back again? In seeking to answer these questions, Andrew Denton journeys into the world of mental illness, a world that's often invisible because - in our fear - we choose to look away. Angels and Demons would be suitable for middle and senior secondary students as well as tertiary students in a number of human and social science areas including Psychology, Health and Personal Development, Biology and Media Studies. In providing a human face to the many aspects of mental illness, including how it affects young people in caring for family members with a mental illness, the film opens up this subject in a compassionate and empathetic way. We see the realities of the daily lives of people living with mental illnesses, their suffering and their joys, the angels and the demons.

It is a land rich in history for its traditional owners, but it now sits within the confines of white ownership and white law. The Circuit can help teachers and students explore a range of issues facing Australia today, in a way that is informative and entertaining, and does not try to avoid the difficult and sensitive nature of these issues. FAMILY FOOTSTEPS: SERIES 2 (Screening on ABC1 on Thursday 28th August at 8.30pm)

People from over 185 different countries have made Australia their home. Our multicultural identity is based on their sacrifices and contributions. But many Australians know very little about their family's cultural history and have never visited their parents' or grandparents' homelands. This gap often creates tensions between the migrant parents and the next generation. December Films, the makers of Family Footsteps, were most interested in telling the stories of individuals whose families came from countries where their lives would have contrasted in significant ways with their lives in Australia. The study guide to accompany the second series of Family Footsteps, has been written for secondary students. It provides information and suggestions for learning activities in English, Geography, History, LOTE, Media and curriculum projects exploring the concepts of identity and belonging.

AUSTRALIAN STORY: IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN

Bill McHarg had it all. As the Victorian Chairman and one of the founders of Colliers International, a hugely successful global property firm, he wielded enormous power and influence. Last November Bill McHarg told the company that he was about to do something 'outrageous'. And sure enough he was. Frustrated by what he viewed as the Federal Government's lack of action on climate change, he launched a guerilla-style attack against the former Prime Minister John Howard, in his seat of Bennelong. What drove such a conventional man to do such unconventional things? And what happens when a member of the establishment takes up arms against one of their own?

This authoritative but entertaining program explores the traditions and practices that dominated Anglo Saxon poetry - poetry that was expected to satisfy many basic needs in society at the time. Factories and workhouses brought a look, sound and smell like nothing before them. Canals to carry the coal barges were dug, snaking through the countryside from the factories to the ports. The age of steam also brought the railway and travel was no longer the sole preserve of the wealthy.

STING: SONGS FROM THE LABYRINTH

Sting ventures into new musical territory with a special featuring the music of acclaimed Elizabethan songwriter, John Dowland (1563- 1626). "The songs of John Dowland have been haunting me for the past 20 years," says the former Police front man. Born in 1563, Dowland has long captivated performers and listeners alike with his songs and introspective music. Composed primarily for lute, but also small ensembles, it remains arresting in its simplicity, spellbinding with melancholy and joy. It was perhaps inevitable that Sting - one of today's most internationally acclaimed troubadours - would be drawn to revisit Dowland's work from a contemporary perspective.
